———- SUMMARY DESCRIPTION ———-
Donors to AIRC whose staff work with program partners on reservations to identify needs, arrange volunteer support, identify people in need of assistance, obtain facilities and volunteer the own time to improve the community where they live.

———- DATACARD DESCRIPTION ———-
THE AMERICAN INDIAN HEALTH RELIEF COUNCIL (AIRC), BASED IN RAPID CITY, SOUTH DAKOTA, HAS BEEN IN OPERATION SINCE 1989. BECAUSE AIRC’S PROGRAM MANAGER AND MANY OF ITS STAFF ARE NATIVE AMERICANS, THEY HAVE A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF THE NEEDS OF THEIR PEOPLE.
AIRC STAFF WORK WITH WELL OVER 300 PROGRAM PARTNERS ON MORE THAN 22 RESERVATIONS TO IDENTIFY NEEDS, ARRANGE VOLUNTEER SUPPORT, IDENTIFY PEOPLE IN NEED OF ASSISTANCE, OBTAIN FACILITIES, AND VOLUNTEER THEIR OWN TIE TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY WHERE THEY LIVE.
EXAMPLES OF AIRC’S HIGHLY TARGETED PROGRAMS INCLUDE BREAKFAST IN A BAG (PROVIDES HEALTHY MEALS TO ELDERS), PROJECT GROW (PLOWS AND PROVIDES SEEDS FOR GARDENS), BABY BASKET (PROVIDES PLENTIFUL SUPPLIES TO MOTHERS OF NEWBORNS), WINTER FUEL (SUBSIDIZES THE COST OF FUEL FOR ELDERS), QUILT MAKING (PROVIDES FABRIC TO ELDERS WHO MAKE QUILTS FOR OTHERS IN NEED), THANKSGIVING (HUGE DISTRIBUTION OF FOOD TO COMMUNITIES AND INDIVIDUALS), CHRISTMAS (PROVIDES GIFTS & MEALS TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WHO MIGHT OTHERWISE GO WITHOUT), HEALTH CLINICS (PROVIDES SUPPLIES TO IMPROVE LOCAL MEDICAL CARE), SHOES AND CLOTHING (PROVIDES WARM WINTER COATS AND SHOES) AND ELDERLY NUTRITION (SUPPORTS ELDER NUTRITION CENTERS).
AIRC’S VISION IS TO ACHIEVE SELF-SUFFICIENT COMMUNITIES, SO WE REQUIRE THAT SUBSTANTIAL COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERISM BE A PART OF THE PROCESSING OR DISTRIBUTION OF THESE GOODS. FOR EXAMPLE: DOZENS OF COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS DELIVER FOOD TO ELDERS LIVING IN THE OUTLYING AREAS, MOTHERS SORT DIAPERS INTO BAGS, DOZENS OF ELDERS SEW BASKETS AND MAKE QUILTS AND COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS REVITALIZE ELDERLY NUTRITION CENTERS.
ALTERNATIVELY, AIRC REQUIRES THAT THE GOODS BE USED IN AN INCENTIVE PROGRAM. FOR EXAMPLE: DIAPERS ARE USED AS AN INCENTIVE TO ENCOURAGE MOTHERS TO BRING THEIR BABIES INTO HEALTH CLINICS, PERSONAL HEALTH CARE PRODUCTS ARE USED AS INCENTIVES TO ATTRACT ELDERS TO DIABETES SCREENINGS, SHOES ARE SOMETIMES USED TO ENCOURAGE RESIDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN WALKING PROGRAMS.
